Holding the Plain

At the edge of visibility, one figure remains. The giraffe stands in pale morning haze, the golden grass flattened around it, the sky and earth barely distinguishable from one another. There is no drama here, only presence, the particular stillness of a creature that has no reason to move. After thirty years at altitude, Dirk Collins understands this quality in wild things: the authority of simply occupying one's place in the world. The image asks nothing. It offers everything.

— Dirk Collins, Planet 5 preservation photographer
